Dear Mr. Maddng:
If anyone wants to know how US involvement in Afghanistan is going to turn out, all they have to do is read the history of Afghanistan.
The place has been occupied by everyone from Alexander the Great to Queen Victoria, from the Boy Scouts to the Soviet Union. Each met with the same degree of success.
There are some places where the folks who live there like things just the way they are. The trick is to contain them. Killing them until just the nice ones are left has its limitations.

I believe our extended stay in Iraq illustrates what we can expect in the way of success in Afghanistan. Much like our experiences in Vietnam should have hinted on what we would have seen in Iraq.

Couldn't agree more. Seems every new generation of politicians has to learn the same lessons over and over again. This is all so sadly predictable.
Amen. At least the reception of homecoming troops is better than when we came home from the Asian jungle.
Why are all the lessons learned written in the blood of our people?
Irondad - let me just say this...
Welcome Home! We appreciate your service to our country and her interests abroad. As an American, we all owe you a debt of gratitude.
