The first one is the authentication for Remote Desktop. If you RDP to a server or anothe workstation not running Vista or Windows Server 2008 (another words the majority of the machines in your present network, you get a screen prompting you that it can't authenticate that looks like this:
to end this, you can change the settings for your RDP session by clicking advanced and changing the drop-down and setting it to connect if authentication fails.
There is also a registry hack for this, but I haven't tested it as of yet.
The other annoyance to most admins using Vista is the continual prompt about elivated priviledges. You can disable this as well.
Open secpol.msc
expand local policies
expand security options
scroll down to User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode
change the setting to Elevate without Prompting

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. I've been told that Windows isn't supporting XP past the end of the year so I should have Vista put on the computer.
There have been some negative experiences by Vista users. What is your take on Vista for a home / small office laptop?

I've been running Vista for 6 weeks now. I don't have a single bad word to say about it. I like it more ever day. Dell doesn't seem to have all of their drivers tested out and working well with Vista on some of their systems, but Toshiba does!

i was wondering if you could advise me with a situation i have; i need to set up remote desktop with 2 computers. 1 is in america running xp prof and the other in russia running vista ult. i want to set the russian comp up before i leave so when i get back to the states i can use it remotely. what do i need to do to this comp before i leave russia?

I don't know who told you MS was pulling support by teh end of the year, but they are wrong.
MS will support XP SP2 until at least 2008, unless they release a new service pack. Most likely we will see support for it long after that considering how long after XP came out that Vista came out.
